5 Red Flags of a Crypto Bot Scam (And How to Spot Them)
Thousands of crypto bot scams run every year. Learn the exact red flags that separate legitimate automated trading tools from schemes designed to steal your money.
Builder of AI agents, crypto trading bots, and open-source automation tools. Sharing practical guides on how to build, deploy, and profit from AI and DeFi technology.
The promise is always the same: "Our AI bot generates 3-10% daily returns with no risk." Thousands of people lose money to crypto bot scams every year. Here's exactly how to spot them.
Red Flag #1: Guaranteed Returns
The claim: "Earn 5% daily, guaranteed."
The reality: No trading strategy can guarantee returns. Markets are fundamentally uncertain. Any person or company claiming otherwise is either lying or running a Ponzi scheme where early investors are paid with later investors' money.
What legitimate services say: "Historical returns of X%, past performance does not guarantee future results" โ because that's the honest answer.
Red Flag #2: No Verifiable Track Record
The claim: "Our bot has generated 500% returns since 2020."
The question to ask: Can I see the actual trading history, with timestamps, order IDs, and exchange account verification?
Screenshots are easily faked. Testimonials are easily fabricated. Legitimate trading operations can share:
- Verified exchange API read access
- Third-party audit reports
- On-chain transaction history (for DeFi)
If they can't provide any of this, assume the returns are fiction.
Red Flag #3: Requires Sending Funds to Them
The setup: "Deposit 1 ETH and our bot will trade it for you. Withdraw anytime."
The reality: You've given them your funds. You now have zero control. "Withdraw anytime" becomes "withdrawal is processing" becomes "we're having technical issues" becomes gone.
The legitimate alternative: Bots that trade using your own exchange API keys (read + trade permissions, never withdrawal permissions). Your funds never leave your exchange account.
Legitimate bot setup:
Your funds โ Your exchange account โ API keys (no withdrawal permission)
โ
Bot software (on their server or yours)
Scam setup:
Your funds โ Their wallet/account
Red Flag #4: MLM / Referral Structures
The setup: "Earn 30% of referrals' profits forever. Build your network!"
This is almost always a pyramid scheme. The "bot" profits come primarily from recruiting new members, not actual trading. When recruitment slows, the whole thing collapses.
Legitimate trading tools might have referral bonuses (1-5% discount for new users), but they don't depend on referrals to pay existing users.
Red Flag #5: Anonymous Team With No Code
The claim: "Our proprietary AI algorithm is confidential."
The problem: Legitimate trading tools either:
- Open-source their code (like our tools here)
- Are backed by a verifiable team with real identities and track records
Total anonymity + "trust us, our algorithm works" = run.
What to look for:
- GitHub repo with real code
- LinkedIn profiles for founders
- Physical business address
- Previous projects the team has built
Quick Checklist
Before using any crypto bot service:

- [ ] Is the team public with verifiable identities?
- [ ] Does it trade on MY exchange account (not their custody)?
- [ ] No guaranteed return claims?
- [ ] No MLM/recruitment structure?
- [ ] Registered business with real contact info?
